A professional guide to help you get the most out of your aerosol spray cans

Aerosol spray cans, whether for paint, lubricants, or other products, are handy tools for a variety of tasks on the job. However, to achieve the best results while staying safe, it’s crucial to follow a few key steps. Here’s a professional step-by-step guide to help you get the most out of your aerosol spray cans:

Prepare your workspace

  • Ensure proper ventilation: Always work in a well-ventilated space or outdoors to avoid inhaling harmful fumes. This is especially important if you’re using spray paint or other chemical-based sprays.
  • Protect your surroundings: Lay down drop cloths, newspaper, or plastic sheeting to safeguard surfaces from overspray. This saves time on cleanup later.
  • Safety gear matters: Don’t skip the PPE. Wear gloves to protect your hands, goggles for your eyes, and a suitable mask or respirator to shield your lungs from fumes and fine particles.

Protective Wear

Shake the can thoroughly

  • Mix it right: Shake the can vigorously for 1-2 minutes before use. This ensures the contents are evenly mixed for consistent performance. You should hear the mixing ball rattling inside.
  • Follow the label: Check the product instructions, some sprays may have specific guidelines for shaking or preparation.

 Test before you spray

  • Trial Run: Before starting your project, test the spray on a scrap piece or, even better, use our bespoke spray-out cards developed with Mipa Paints. These panels are perfect for checking colour accuracy and opacity, helping you avoid costly mistakes and ensuring the right finish for automotive, commercial, or industrial applications.

  • Adjust the nozzle: If needed, adjust the nozzle (if the can has a directional spray nozzle) to achieve a fine mist or a wider spray depending on your needs.

 Spray like a pro

  • Distance is key: Hold the can 6-12 inches away from the surface. Too close can cause drips or streaks, while too far may result in uneven application.
  • Angle for coverage: Spray at a slight angle, not directly perpendicular, to ensure smooth and even coats.
  • Keep it moving: Use steady, sweeping motions and avoid lingering in one spot to prevent uneven buildup or drips.

 Apply in light, even coats

  • Don’t rush: Multiple light coats are far better than one heavy coat. This reduces the risk of runs, drips, and uneven drying.
  • Overlap strokes: Slightly overlap each pass to achieve seamless coverage.

Let it dry

  • Drying times: Let the spray dry before adding additional layers. Dry times can vary depending on the product, temperature, and humidity, but typically, it’s around 15 minutes to an hour for light coats.
  • Touch test: Before applying additional layers, ensure the surface is dry to the touch. If it feels tacky, wait a bit longer.

Prevent nozzle clogs

  • Clear the nozzle: After use, hold the can upside down and spray for a few seconds until only air comes out. This prevents blockages from dried product.
  • Wipe it clean: Use a cloth or paper towel to clean any residue from the nozzle for next time.

Storage

  • Keep it upright: Store the can upright in a cool, dry place. Avoid extreme temperatures and keep it away from open flames or heat sources, as aerosol cans are pressurised.

Pro tips for a flawless finish

  • Watch the weather: If you’re working outdoors, avoid windy conditions. Wind can blow your spray off target, leading to uneven coverage.
  • Patience pays off: Build up layers with multiple thin coats and allow each one to dry properly. Rushing can ruin the finish.
  • Practice first: Before starting the project, practise on scrap material or one of our bespoke spray-out cards.  These allow you to check colour accuracy and opacity, saving time, money, and ensuring a flawless finish.
